News from the ground under

This is a new article, I am looking to develop into much more...
We are slowly developing the site into a hip hop haven, Sure Shots was always going to be much more than a place to come and buy the cheapest underground hip hop in the UK! With full audio representation, pics, reviews, etc we hope to provide the average hip hop fan with a much broader taste in the music we love. Hopefully bringing the underground hip hop community together cos I reckon we need a dedicated site, here in the U to the K. OK so we are based in Guernsey, that doesn't mean we don't know our ish, remember the Rakim quote? "It's not where you're from, it's where you are at"

So expect, bad spelling, impromptu messages, rumours and news that I have pinched from elsewhere and changed the words! Ha Ha.Seriously though,WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR CONTRIBUTORS anyone with info, news articles, tune reviews, listings for nights or any hip hop related trash, funny or serious, you know who to contact.
Take it easy now and remember the Sure Shots code...."don't drink from the main stream".

LISTS

Aren't lists great? I love em! Here are a few........

TOP TEN SURE SHOTS - 1/4/03
Current tunes floating my boat here at Sure Shots Tower Of Power...

1.Foreign Beggars ft Anik & Tommy Evans - "where did the sun go?" new UK 12" action out now.Uckin dope beat! Been playing it from cdr whilst waiting for the 12.Don't sleep.

2.The Troublemakers - get misunderstood(Quantic rmx)12" Anyone should know by now that anything that Will Quantic does should be enough to warrant a purchase! The Brighton boy has done it again, this track is instrumental, cinematic hip hop at its best.Wicked funky little bass plucks going on with a cool vocal sample running throughout. It takes me away and will definitely feature on holiday mini discs! Incredible.

3.Chester P - "The Wiccaman Theory", B side track from the new Lowlife 12".This will also be included on the double vinyl and CD compilation coming in February?.Lots of the UKs finest putting in appearences.ESSENTIAL

4.Zaire Black & June 22 - "life work it out" 7" lovely action brought to you by Brightons Puma Strut label, nothing flashy, just the sort of hip hop that you are glad you bought.Dope rhymes, phat laid back beats and for all you pussies that don't buy 7"s, Puma are putting out a CD only compilation soon, so peep that.

5.People Under The Stairs - Acid raindrops 12" 2nd time in the top 10 except this time the actual 12" version. Anyone that has slept on the PUTS LP "OST" you missed out on a Sure Shot! This track is arguably the best track from the LP and also includes an instrumental, on the flip, new track Hang Loose pt2 and Montego Slay makes this a bargain!

6.Edan - emcees somke crack remix 12" yet again the new old schooler kicks shit over 88 style drums, can't get enough of this.Only for true heads and please don't smoke aluminium!

7.Hint - the lookup/strides 10" - can't tell you the name of the better track cos its a white but I'm really feeling it.Its on the Hombre label and is a nice, chunky, kinda sunday afternoon session track? Percussive hip hop drums at a decent head nod bpm.Jazzed out instrumental action and totally essential.

8.Phi LIfe Cypher - "over" new 12 from Phi Life taken from the forthcoming LP on Zebra Traffic due out in April, should be dope.As will the new Life solo LP entitled "everyday life", the lead single being Bush/Blair due anytime soon also on Zebra Traffic.

9.Mr Dibbs - outreach 5 - to the uninitiated Dibbs is a man mountain, beardy nut case from some mad place in the US, his friends are the likes of Slug, Eyedea, Non Prophets etc therefore makes him very fucking cool. Not only does he hang around with hip hops finest but he's a bad ass DJ too. This track is an awesome example of skills, drums and samplers. Please, please search out his Primitive tracks LP/CD which was used for an Alien Workshop video, up there with Shadow, Krush et al.

10.Vast Aire & Aesop Rock - tap dancin for scratch - ah fuck off callin this non hip hop you narrow minded oik!Taken from the Bedford Files LP. Bleepy anti music, future hop!If David Cronenberg produced hip hop it would sound like this. Aesop and Vast spittin vocal carnage in a semi freestyle manner. You need to hear this on a massive system to be beleived(not that you ever will cos no-one except me would play it!).LP is for all lovers of Def Jux, Anti pop etc, not for Nas, Jay Z and bling lovers. This is the future.

Sleepers

Too much of the best music gets slept on, here are a couple of oldies but goodies that I didn't.Did you? Shame!

In no particular order cos its all good.

1.Styles of Beyond - 2000 Fold LP.With guests like Rhettmatic, Divine Styler and Click the Supah Latin. How did people not hear about it! A very futuristic sounding LP. I love it.

2.Typical Cats - Typical Cats LP.People that know me, hate it when I mention this. It is simply one of the best LPs in recent years. Funky, dope beats, brilliant lyrical displays from 3 very different voices. If you see it, I urge you to buy it and anything else on Galapagos 4 label for that matter. Serious hip hop bizness.

3.Da Grassroots - Passage through time LP.Think this was around 99 on Conception records. Chilled out, vibey and organic sounding, same sort of category as Digable Planets/Pharcyde/Black Eyed Peas, reminds me the Mission LP quite a bit, what! You slept on that as well?

4.Sonic Sum - Himbro st 12". Not particularly old, taken from the Sanity Annexe LP on Ozone, home to Mike Ladd et al. This is a beautiful piece of hip hop! One in the eye for all the people that are subjected and actually to pop rap, this, for me, represented what hip hop has become.

5.Natural Resource - Negro League Baseball.I first heard this on a Babu/Beat Junkies tape way back. The Puba sampling, infectious dusty jazz piano loop, the chugging drums and dope rhymes, great metaphorical message and Whut Whut blazing the trail.Awesome, oh and the B side is dope too.

6.Mr Complex - Do it up/Visualize rmx. Now I'm not gonna be obvious about how dope the A side is but flip to the B and feel the remix of Visualize.A very different feel to the original and in this case the remix works better than the original. For me this rarely happens in hip hop.Not sure how easy this is to find now?

7.Gemini the Gifted One - Brooklyn Kids. This is apparently a very hard to find item, I have it on the Scars and Pain EP. This tune is the very essence of hip hop.Fat ass boom bap drums and a skilled mc.Straight up street tale, very Black Moon sounding.Gemini slipped into obscurity until recent times where he teamed up with DJ Dangermouse and J Zone with more material to come on the Warp hip hop offshoot Lexoleum.

Welcome to Sure Shots Records.

Based in Guernsey in the Channel Islands (just off the North Coast of France), we have the advantage of no VAT on retail items. These savings can be passed directly onto you when buying tunes and merchandise from this store. Postage prices are also very good value and you can usually expect to receive your goods within 3 days. All items are sent via recorded delivery for ease of mind.

We have a decent catalogue of vinyl for you to choose from as well as a comprehensive collection of CDs and hip-hop related merchandise.
As far as payment goes, the bank is being a bitch, so I'd rather take a cheque made payable to ' A De Carteret ' or I'm more than happy to take cards via paypal, its a piece of pie to do and it works out cheaper than the bank!

APOLOGIES

Such is the nature of trying to specialise in the more underground sounds, not to mention being a dad now! I have to work a full time job so I can keep the bills at bay....

If you can't find what you want email us or give us a call on 01481 726 696(best between 7 and 9 PM but better still between 12 and 5 on saturday) and we'll do our best to find the stuff you want.

CHEAP SHIT

I figured a quite cool way of offering decent, actually mental prices is to offer tunes at presale.(I can't be arsed to stock hundreds of tunes anymore as it's too time consuming and costly) I.E let you know a couple of weeks in advance, we collate an order between us,(ultimately I'm buying the same tunes as you!) we all share the dividend. It's a bit like one of those crap book clubs except with our favourite tunes!

If you dont want to buy anything feel free to just browse our catalogues or check out our popular forum where you can meet and greet fellow hip hop heads.

Peace,
Andre and Pat at Sure Shots
